The machining process may stay similar as a project moves from prototype to production, but the manufacturing priorities often change.

Early parts are usually used to validate geometry, fit, interfaces, and function. Once the design becomes stable, setup strategy, fixtures, inspection points, finishing, and repeatability can be reviewed for ongoing production.

Three Stages from Prototype to Production

Quantity Can Change the Manufacturing Strategy

A process that is practical for a few prototype parts may not be the most suitable route for repeat production. As quantity increases, fixture design, tool life, setup sequence, material preparation, and inspection planning may need to be reviewed again.

Keep Prototype Changes Connected to the Production Drawing

If a prototype is modified during testing, the approved changes should be reflected in the latest drawing before future parts are produced. Clear revision control helps prevent an earlier version from being manufactured again by mistake.
