Grinding Is Often the Final Precision Step After CNC Machining

Turning or milling can create the main geometry of a component, while grinding may be added later when selected diameters, flat surfaces, or mating areas require additional dimensional or surface control.

The grinding requirement should be considered early because machining stock, heat treatment, datum selection, and final inspection may all depend on it.

Where Precision Grinding May Be Used

Precision Fit AreaSelected fitted surfaces may require tighter final control than general machined geometry.

Grinding Should Be Planned Before Final Machining

Grinding AllowanceMaterial may need to remain on selected surfaces for final grinding.
Reference SurfacesThe machining and grinding route should preserve appropriate datums.
Heat TreatmentIf the part is hardened, process sequence should consider possible dimensional change.
Center FeaturesShafts may require center holes or other references when grinding between centers is specified.
Final InspectionCritical ground features should be inspected according to the drawing requirements.

Turning vs. Grinding

CNC TurningEfficient for producing the main shaft geometry, diameters, shoulders, grooves, threads, and faces.
GrindingUsed selectively where the drawing requires additional dimensional or surface control on finished areas.

Grinding is therefore not automatically required for every turned component. It should be used where the functional requirement justifies the additional process.

Surface Finish Should Follow Part Function

● Bearing journals may have different requirements from general shaft surfaces
● Seal-contact areas may need specific surface conditions
● Mating faces may require flatness or finish control
● Cosmetic surfaces are not automatically grinding surfaces
● The drawing should identify which areas actually need grinding

Typical CNC + Grinding Route

01 · Rough MachiningCreate the main component geometry and leave allowance where required.
02 · Heat TreatmentPerform hardening or other treatment if specified by the drawing.
03 · Finish MachiningComplete features that do not require grinding.
04 · Precision GrindingFinish the selected diameter, face, or flat surface.
05 · InspectionCheck the finished features according to the agreed drawing specification.
