How to design a rotating shaft?

A Rotating Shaft Drawing Should Define the Features That Control Fit & Rotation

For CNC manufacturing, a shaft drawing needs more than overall diameter and length. Bearing journals, shoulders, threads, grooves, key features, surface finish, runout, and reference datums may all affect how the part is turned, ground, and inspected.

The customer defines the functional requirements; the manufacturing review focuses on how those requirements can be produced and verified.

Key Features to Define on a Shaft Drawing

FeatureWhy It Matters in Manufacturing
Bearing JournalDiameter, fit, surface finish, and relationship to adjacent features may be important for bearing installation and rotation.
ShoulderShoulder position and face condition can control axial location of bearings, spacers, gears, or other components.
ThreadsThread type, pitch, length, relief, and start position should be specified where functional.
GroovesRetaining-ring, seal, relief, or other grooves need clear width, depth, and location.
Keyway / FlatTorque-transfer or locating features may require secondary milling after turning.
Center HolesCenter features may be required when the shaft needs later grinding or machining between centers.

Concentricity & Runout Can Be More Important Than a Single Diameter

A shaft may contain several journals and shoulders that need to rotate relative to the same axis. In these cases, the relationship between features can matter more than the tolerance of one isolated diameter.

● Identify the functional rotational axis
● Show which journals or bores relate to that axis
● Define runout or positional requirements where needed
● Use clear datums for inspection
● Avoid applying unnecessary tight control to non-functional areas

Surface Finish Depends on the Contact Area

Bearing SurfaceMay require a different finish from a non-contact shaft section.
Seal SurfaceSurface condition can be important where a seal runs directly on the shaft.
Threaded AreaThread geometry and burr condition should match the assembly requirement.
General ODNon-functional surfaces may not need the same finish level as critical journals.

Turning May Be Only One Part of the Process

CNC TurningUsed for main diameters, shoulders, grooves, faces, and many threaded features.
CNC MillingMay be added for keyways, flats, cross holes, slots, or other non-rotational features.
GrindingCan be considered where the drawing requires specific journal accuracy or surface condition.
Heat TreatmentIf specified, machining sequence and possible post-treatment finishing should be considered.
Surface TreatmentPlating, black oxide, passivation, or other finishes should be defined where required.

Information That Helps with Manufacturing Review

● 2D drawing and 3D model if available
● Material and heat-treatment condition
● Critical diameters and fits
● Runout or concentricity requirements
● Surface finish on bearing or sealing areas
● Threads, grooves, keyways, flats, and cross holes
● Required quantity and surface treatment
