Sheet Metal Stamping Process

SHEET METAL STAMPING · TOOL TRIAL · PRODUCTION CONTROL
How a stamped metal part moves from drawing to repeat production

Hongming Sheng manufactures custom stamped brackets, clips, contacts, terminals, covers and formed components according to customer drawings, CAD files or approved samples.

The production route is selected around part geometry, material, thickness, tolerances, annual quantity and secondary operations—not by volume alone.

What Happens at Each Stage?

Drawing & DFM Review

Engineers review material behavior, bend or draw features, critical dimensions, datum structure, burr direction, cosmetic surfaces and the expected production volume.

Tool Design & Build

The die route is selected and tooling is manufactured, assembled and checked. More complex tools may include several cutting and forming stations, guides, pilots and sensors.

Trial & Sample Approval

Trial parts are measured and reviewed for forming condition, dimensions, burrs, flatness, appearance and assembly fit. Tool adjustments are completed before approval.

Repeat Production

Material, setup, feed and selected part characteristics are monitored during production. Tool condition and lubrication are managed to support stable output.

Secondary Operations

Parts may require tapping, machining, welding, hardware insertion, deburring, cleaning, plating, powder coating or assembly after stamping.

Stamping Methods We Review

Progressive Stamping

Coil strip advances through successive stations. Often considered for stable, higher-volume parts when tooling investment is justified.

Single-Hit & Compound Dies

Suitable for selected blanking, piercing and forming parts where a simpler die route meets production needs.

Deep Drawing

Creates recessed or hollow forms. Material flow, draw depth, thinning, lubrication and corner radii require detailed review.

Prototype route: when a design is still changing or expected volume is uncertain, laser cutting, CNC punching and bending can sometimes validate the part before dedicated stamping tooling is released.

Materials and Finishing

Common Materials

  • Stainless steel
  • Carbon and alloy steel
  • Aluminum alloys
  • Copper and copper alloys
  • Brass and selected specialty materials

Finish Planning

Options may include zinc or nickel plating, passivation, anodizing, powder coating, brushing and polishing. Specify coating, color, masking, grounding and cosmetic requirements on the drawing.

Tolerances and Quality Control

Incoming Control

Material grade, thickness, temper and surface condition are checked against project requirements.

In-Process Control

Selected dimensions, formed features, burrs, feed condition and tool performance are monitored during production.

Final Verification

Dimensions, threads, finish, appearance and assembly features are inspected using appropriate gauges and measurement equipment.

Tolerance note: achievable tolerances depend on part size, material, thickness, geometry, forming sequence, die construction, secondary operations and inspection method. Mark functional and critical characteristics clearly so they can be evaluated before quotation.
