Drawing-Based CNC Review
Identify Machining Risks Before Production
A CNC part can look straightforward in CAD while still containing thin walls, deep pockets, difficult clamping areas or critical relationships between features.
Send your files for quotation and manufacturing review. We can highlight areas that may need confirmation before the machining route is released.

Six Features That Often Need Extra Review
Thin WallsLow rigidity can allow the part to move during cutting or after it is released from the fixture.
Deep PocketsLong tool reach, chip evacuation and cutting stability can affect time and surface condition.
Small Internal RadiiSmall corner radii may require smaller tools, additional passes and longer machining time.
Limited Clamping AreasParts without practical holding surfaces may require custom fixtures or additional setups.
Features on Multiple FacesDatum transfer between setups can influence related holes, bores and mating surfaces.
Very Tight TolerancesTolerance feasibility depends on feature type, material, geometry, process route and inspection method.
Risk Can Appear After Cutting
Stress Release
Removing substantial stock can change the geometry of thin or uneven sections.
Clamping Influence
A component may measure differently while clamped and after the fixture is released.
Heat & Tool Load
Cutting conditions can influence thin features, surface quality and dimensional stability.
Secondary Processing
Anodizing, plating or heat treatment may affect fits, threads and critical interfaces.
Tolerance note: Requirements such as ±0.01 mm may be achievable for suitable features. Final capability should be confirmed after reviewing the complete drawing, material and inspection requirement.
How the Risk Review Works
1
Confirm Files & Revision
Review the current 2D drawing, 3D model, material, quantity and finish.
2
Identify Critical Features
Confirm functional datums, mating surfaces, threads, bores and inspection points.
3
Plan Machining & Workholding
Review tool access, setup sequence, clamping surfaces and material removal.
4
Report Items for Confirmation
Manufacturing concerns and optional DFM suggestions are discussed before changes are made.
Questions We May Ask Before Quoting
- Which dimensions are functionally critical?
- Which surfaces establish the assembly datums?
- Can a small internal radius be increased?
- Are cosmetic surfaces identified?
- Will anodizing, plating or heat treatment follow machining?
- Are threads measured before or after finishing?
- Is an inspection report required?
Parts That Commonly Need Detailed Review
Thin-Wall Housings
Large cavities, ribs and critical cover interfaces.
Deep-Pocket Parts
Long tool reach and demanding chip removal.
Multi-Face Components
Related features requiring datum transfer between setups.
Finished Components
Machined parts with anodizing, plating, inserts or final assembly.
Risk Review Does Not Change Your Design
The purpose of the review is to identify manufacturing concerns in the submitted design. Any proposed geometry, tolerance, material or finish change should be confirmed by the customer before the controlled drawing is updated.
What to Include in Your CNC RFQ
- STEP, IGES or other 3D CAD file
- Controlled PDF or DWG drawing with revision
- Material grade and quantity
- Critical dimensions, datums and tolerances
- Surface finish and cosmetic requirements
- Threads, inserts and assembly interfaces
- Inspection documentation requirements
- Target delivery date and destination
