Choose a stamping partner, not just a low quotation
A reliable supplier should understand the drawing, select a practical tooling route, control production changes and communicate clearly. Use this mobile checklist to compare providers before committing to tooling.
Five Areas to Score

Engineering Review
Can the supplier discuss material temper, thickness, bend radii, springback, burr direction, tolerance priorities and alternative processes?

Tooling Control
Ask who designs, builds, trials, maintains and repairs the die—and how drawing revisions are controlled before steel is changed.

Inspection Planning
Confirm the proposed measurement method for critical features, sample approval criteria and records required for repeat orders.

Production Stability
Review press selection, feeding, lubrication, setup documentation, tool maintenance and handling of nonconforming parts.

Communication & Delivery
Expect clear milestones, revision confirmation, packaging details and prompt notice when a technical or scheduling issue appears.
Questions to Ask Before Tooling
Tooling & Commercial Terms - Who owns the tool, and where will it be stored?
- What is included in the tooling price and trial process?
- How are repairs, wear components and design changes handled?
- What production volume was used to select the die concept?
Quality & Documentation - Which dimensions will be checked during samples and production?
- Are material certificates or finish records required?
- Can the supplier provide the project-specific FAI, control plan or other records you actually need?
- How are gauges, inspection frequency and drawing revisions managed?

The lowest unit price may not be the lowest total cost if tooling changes, scrap, inspection, rework, packaging or delivery risk are excluded.
Supplier Red Flags
Pause and Clarify If You See:
- A quotation issued without reviewing the drawing revision or annual volume
- No clear response on tooling ownership, maintenance or change control
- Blanket tolerance promises without reference to geometry and material
- Unclear material grade, temper, finish source or traceability
- No defined sample approval or critical-dimension inspection plan
- Pressure to start tooling before technical questions are closed
